numbered. The last names of the female line or males who have married Welsh
females are capitalized and bold to stand out, but they have all been listed
above for quick refrence.
Patrick and Ellen lived in Waterford, Ireland for an unknown time since some of
their children were born there. It is unknown if Patrick and Ellen Welch
immigrated to US, but it seems they would when their children did. I know that
John, Johanna, Nora and Catherine immigrated since they are listed in John's
obituary as living around the Bloomington, IL area and St. Mary's cemetery
listing. Johanna and Nora's marriages are not listed in the McLean or Ford Co.
marriage index as John and CAtherine's are leading me to wonder if they were
married in IRL. The dates of birth of Patrick and Ellen's children (except for
John) are approximations, but death dates are sure:

Our family information had been that our surname had been WALSH then changed to
Welsh, but I have found proof that it is not so. John WELCH kept his name as
such according to his obituary in the Bloomington Pentagraph of 9-3-1896, altho
he named all his children WELSH.
The family story goes that John A. was born in Dublin, Ireland and held the job
as a bone setter (surgeon?), sailing to the USA in 1853 at the age of 31. His
obituary states that he came to Bloomington/Normal, IL in 1858; it is unknown
his migration route. I don't think the 1858 year is correct because he
married his wife in this area in 1855. According to his obit., he worked for
the Chicago & Alton railroad until 1880 when he bought a farm in Merna, IL. In
1891 he moved to Roberts, IL with one of his sons (John or Maurice; Patrick had
died in 1892). In the book, McLean Co. IL Marriage Records of 1831-1855, Vol. 1.
he is listed as John Welch marrying Johanna McGrath on 10-13-1855 in Bloomington
(by Fr. Cahill of Holy Trinity Catholic Church). Note: the obituary of 1896
lists John age at death as 74 which proves his birth year as 1822.

McGrath, mo. Ellen HOGAN)), mo. Hannah O'BRIAN (( f. Patrick
O'Brian, mo. Mary MURPHY) was a nurse whose family came from Donegal,
Ireland during the potato famine in 1854. They settled in an area near
Bloomington called "6 mile" and had eight children (4 lived) renamed with
surname WELSH. John's funeral was held at Holy Trninity Church by Rev. Weldon
and buried in in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Bloomington. His grave is
marked only by a brick that says "J. Welsh" on it and buried there are John,
Johanna, Michael, Thomas, Ellen, unnamed twin of John, Patrick and his daughter,
Anna. After John died, Johanna worked as a housekeeper from 1896 to 1910.
NOTE: John's son, Patrick. birth date listed here as 1853, yet John and Johanna
weren't married unti 1855. Either there was another wife before Johanna or birth
date is wrong. Patricks death listing says he was 39 which would agree with an
1853 date. The cemetery listing shows age of 25 which would make 1867 birth date
which couldn't be since his younger brother, Maurice was born in 1867. That
would mean the first wife must have died in Ireland during childbirth (?) since
John set sail in 1853/4. Hence, Johnanna must be a second wife.

This here ends the initial decendants of John A. Welch and Johanna McGrath (My
GGG). For the sake of sanity and space, I have decided to start over the
pedigree at Maurice James and Mary Belle McNeish (My GG) and from there I will
start over a pedgree for Joseph Wm. and Rose Mary Karels (My G).
Maurice James WELSH was born in Bloomington, IL. At age 25 he followed his
parents to Roberts, IL where he farmed most of his life. He married in Gibson
City, IL (by Fr. Kelly) and Il marriage records lists the surname as McCurish
Her Grandfather, Thomas McNeish, Sr., was a boot/shoemaker who immigrated to PA
(3 years) before buying 80 acres in Ford Co.,IL. They had been Presbyterian's in
Scotland and joined the United Brethren in Ford Co., IL. Thomas Sr. is buried in
Benton Harbor, MI and his wife, Jean buried in Roberts, IL. They lived in Benton
Harbor 1883-1889.
Mary Belle's father: Thomas McNeish, Jr. was 21 when he came to Ford Co. and
farmed many years before becoming a boot/shoemaker, as his father was, until he
started a harnessing business (his daughter Jeanie L. ((Mary Belle's sister)),
took on this business. She also married KENNEY, WILLIAM E. in Ford Co. on
6-01-1899). Thomas Jr. married Isabella Burnett of Dumfriesshire, Scotland
(immigrated to LaPrarie, IL) and they had nine children, were prominent citizens
of Roberts. He was killed by a skyrocket when he drove a spike into it to
replace a fuse.
Mary belle was member of Congregational Church and President of the Christian
Endeaver Society and organist. She worked as secretary and teacher at the
Methodist Church in Roberts, bookkeeper at her father's harness store. Mary
belle attended State TEachers College at Normal and taught at Guthry, IL until
she converted to Catholocism and married Maurice Welsh. Maurice farmed in
Normal, Covell, Williams, IA in 1915 and Morris, MN in 1920. He served on school
board at Williams, prominent in Knights of Columbus and member of Modern
Woodman. They then moved to Fargo, ND in 1922, where he worked on Northern
Pacific Railroad and as night watchman at Kresge's Dime Store. Migration:
